Founded in 1952, Carl Ownby established his hardware shop to meet the growing needs of builders, homeowners, and farmers in Sevierville and its surrounding areas. With over 20 years of prior experience in the hardware industry, Carl was known for his prudence, patience, and unwavering commitment to customer care.
The business quickly expanded, taking over three neighboring historic buildings to accommodate a wider selection of building supplies, along with a lumber yard on Chapman Highway. Starting with just five employees in its first year, Carl Ownby & Co. grew steadily and organically, now proudly employing more than 50 team members.
Guided by a philosophy of smart, necessity-driven growth, the company earned a reputation for exceptional service and quality. This dedication has not gone unnoticed—Carl Ownby & Co. was recognized by Building Supply Business magazine as one of the top 10 fastest-growing independent retailers in the nation and consistently receives local awards for excellence as the region’s best hardware and lumber store.
